FAQ

Heya! Hopefully these answers to some questions we get a lot are helpful, but if you still need answers drop us a line on the contact page! We're always happy to hear from you

I'm still lost... how does text become a TEXTile? Am I am the only one?

You are not alone! Floor looms have quite a complicated process, but the concept is pretty simple! I created an alphabet that assigns certain threads and thread combinations to each letter. Then I use the pedals on the floor loom to lift those threads and weave one line (one letter) at a time. One horizontal line of yarn is one letter so as I weave the text descends from the top to the bottom creating a visual and tactile translation. Stay tuned for a short video for a visual explanation!

Can you translate any text?

Yes! I can translate any text in any language. The end aesthetic is determined by color choice, yarn thickness and length of the text. Some pieces are a single phrase or short quote, and some are entire poems or stories. I have even woven readings from a wedding into a giant 8ft x 8ft Chuppah for the couple to stand under during their ceremony. The possibilities are endless! Feel free to reach out with any ideas or questions - I love working with clients to create something new and unique!

What kind of materials do you use?

I typically use mercerized cotton for the warp (vertical threads) and a variety of natural (various wools) and synthetic yarn and roving for the weft (horizontal thread). I am always happy to discuss preferences and price points with you before starting a custom piece!

How long does a piece take to make?

There are many steps involved when using a floor loom. First there is measuring the warp, then dressing the loom with the warp (sometimes tedious!), weaving and finishing the piece with winding/braiding fringe. This takes many hours and even days depending on the size and design of the piece.

How long does a custom piece take to receive?

This can vary depending on the size of the pice, if materials need to be ordered, and number of orders at any given time. Typically a custom piece can be ready to ship within 4-6 weeks, but don't be shy to reach out and ask what the expected time would be!
